:(

We came home last night, around 10 PM, after shopping for fabrics for making gifts for my friend's baby shower on Saturday, to find the bedroom door locked. Apparently Jason must have locked it on his way out of the bedroom; this is the second time this has happened. The last time it happened, our apartment managers kindly laughed at us and then drilled through the lock, to which we never had a key. And still don't.

Now, since we found tumbler bits all over the floor after the drilling, you would think that the door wouldn't be able to lock again. Wrong. Guess again.

So after a frustrating hour and a half or so of trying to pick the lock with small screwdrivers and drill the lock with a half dead Dremel, we gave up and pulled the air mattress out of the hallway closet and the twin-sized electric blanket (the only blanket that was not in the bedroom), and spent the night on the floor wearing our coats and me wearing my hat. We're lucky that the air mattress is kept in the hallway closet, and that we put it away rather than just toss it in the bedroom closet with the rest of our camping stuff; and that the electric blanket was in there, too. Although, we didn't end up turning on the stupid blanket until around 4 AM when we were freezing. Jason was dreaming of snow and being really cold, and so he turned on the blanket.

I had a dream that it was morning, you could see the bright, pink, sunny dawn light coming in the windows and filling the room, and it was warm. The alarm was going off in the bedroom and when I turned the handle of the door, it opened so smooth, and I felt this huge relief that it was all over.

But no. The alarm went off at 6:45 AM and in trying to quickly crawl over Jason and the now partially deflated mattress, my wrist collapsed and I felt like I almost sprained it. A quick flip of the breakers, and power was cut to the bedroom. So now we'll have to reset the alarm clock. But instead of it being nice and warm, it was cold and dark and I stumbled back over Jason and the air mattress and snuggled up under the blanket for another 15 minutes. It's definitely the beginning of the cooler months, the hot shower I took when I got up felt sooo good.

Cut back to hours later, I picked Jason up during lunch and we went to Lowe's and bought a titanium drill bit, recommended by an employee there. The guy was putting things on shelves and asked if we needed help finding anything (maybe in response to my question to Jason as to what kind of metal material he thought we would be drilling into) and Jason explained that we were looking for a drill bit to drill through a lock with. He looked a little perplexed and said that he wasn't sure, because he'd never done that before, paused, and then said he guessed his mother would be proud of him. But then determined that the titanium bit would probably be the best because it should be able to drill through anything. Jason tried drilling through the lock with the fully charged Dremel, this morning, but he said the bit broke off in the lock. Luckily he was able to get it out.

If the drilling of the lock doesn't work, but Jason has faith that it will, his cousin may come over to try and help, and they may just hacksaw their way through it.

I let you know what happens.

1:31 PM ETA: Jason just called, the door is open! He had some problems with the bit spinning in the lock, but he ground down one edge with the help of the Dremel, and that fixed the problem and he was able to use the drill to catch the spring in the lock and open the door. Yay!

Problem now, until we replace the knob, is that apparently the door knob is stuck locked. So he's going to put some tape over it so we don't do this again. But, if it does happen again, we've got the bit to do the job!

It's hard to have a sense of humor the second time around. So will you be buying a bedroom door knob? The kind that can be opened with the accompanying pick?

We will definitely be buying a new knob. And the guy at Lowe's offered to key a new knob to the same key as our front door, so there's that option, too.
