Moving? Possibly.

Jason and I may be moving. At least, we put a $250 deposit down on a unit last night. I felt like I just bought my first house. I was excited but suddenly really nervous.

The Thornton Place complex in Northgate looks awesome. They've got a 14 screen theater, 2 apartment buildings, super expensive condos that aren't selling, and there will be lots of cool retail and food places. And then there's the amenities floor.

The amenities floor includes: a game room with a pool table and poker table; a community room with a library, fireplace, big screen TV, full size kitchen (so you can have a large party down there and cook dinner, or whatever); a 24 hour workout center with weights; and even an extra apartment with a full kitchen that you can rent for a night or two for family or friends that need to stay the night.

With signing an early lease, we get: two months free rent, 2 tickets a month for 12 months to the new theater, and a transit package that includes: $20 a month towards a metro pass, and the application fee and annual fee for a Zipcar paid.

We do have to pay for parking, though, and it seems rather pricey to me. $70 a month, but apparently this gives us a key fob that gets us 24 hour access to the garage.

There is also security on site. And a fountain and fire pit in the plaza.

It all seems so cool. It would be so much fun to get to be a part of this, and it seems like they really want to give it a community feel. And, the building is certified LEED Silver, so it's Green and it's energy efficient. AND! All the units come with their own washer/dryer. There's also no water heaters, the complex runs off of a central boiler system so there's never a lack of hot water.

Now, the leasing office, we found out Wednesday night, opened on Wednesday. Apparently they had 22 people come in in the first two hours, and by the time we got there Thursday evening they had already rented around 12 units. All the units that we had liked that were in our price range were already rented, so we were looking at a base price of around $1300 for a 1 bedroom, 1 bath unit.

Then, we found out that a floor plan very similar (smaller bedroom, larger living room) to one we had liked (larger bedroom, smaller living room) was available on the 6th floor, the penthouse floor, for only $1100! We weren't able to see it in person though, because that floor hasn't been completed yet. And so, our trip to the leasing office to ask questions and possibly see units suddenly became a quick decision on whether or not to put money down on this unit, because if we didn't, it could be gone in the morning and then we would have nothing. Or, we would have options at more expensive units.

Once we got home, Jason and I started to have buyers remorse. This is the floor plan of our unit. I'm a little concerned with the lack of storage space. We're moving from a 2 bedroom, 2 bath (though we never use the second bath) into a 1 bedroom, 1 bath, with less than half the closet space of our current place. And we use all of that closet space. So we would really need to cut down on our stuff, especially since this new place doesn't come with a storage unit, and our current storage unit is also packed. Where will we put our tubs of holiday deocrations? Not to mention we now need to figure out where we will station the rabbits since they will be losing their rabbit room (another closet).

Jason is more sad at the thought of leaving our current place behind. We like our building and our unit with our deck, and we like our building managers. Rent is also really cheap at $825 a month, with free parking for both of us and a storage unit. But the building just changed ownership hands and it looks like our current managers won't be the managers of the building for too much longer. And I would be sad to lose my plants. It's sad to think that we'll go to Costco and see the pretty hanging flower baskets and not have a place at home to put one anymore. I would miss the deck. And while the amenities floor downstairs has a grill outside, it wouldn't be the same as grilling on the deck, something we like to do in the summer. There are decks on one side of the building but we forgot to look at those, so I don't know what the prices are.

We can't move in until July 1st, so I guess we've got lots of time to decide. But we may be out of $250 if we change our minds.
